Craig Matthew Smith

About Me

A self confessed geek with a passion for technology. For the past two years, I have worked as a Junior Network Engineer and recently completed my Level 3 ICT apprenticeship. I am dedicated and ambitious, with good organisational skills and attention to detail. I’m eager to learn, always looking for self improvement, and willing to experiment with new possibilities.

Now that I’ve completed my apprenticeship, I’ve transitioned into a full-time role within the T1 Connectivity team. I’m eager to expand my experience while continuously developing my skills, working towards industry-recognised certifications such as, but not limited to, CCNA, AZ-900, Linux+, Security+, CySA+, and NSE, with plans to pursue more advanced certifications in the future.

Outside of work, I’ll take the opportunity to learn new skills, primarily through INE and Pluralsight. I have recently joined Hack The Box Academy to begin focusing on practical cybersecurity exercises, using virtual labs and participating in basic CTF challenges to gain hands-on experience. This will help enhance my problem-solving skills, deepen my understanding of computer systems and cyber security, and allow me to explore new technologies to improve my technical knowledge.

My Hobbies

Learning

With new technologies constantly emerging, it's important for me to keep learning and adapting. I use platforms like INE, Pluralsight, and Hack The Box, along with resources from experts like David Bombal, Network Chuck, and Professor Messer, to expand my knowledge and stay up to date.

AI Art Generation

I create digital imagery using Midjourney, an AI-generated image creation Discord bot that brings my ideas to life with text prompts. With pre-trained models like GFPGAN and ESGRAN, along with software like Photoshop, I can easily tweak and upscale the images for print.

Web & Print

Although I no longer work in design and print, I still enjoy using Photoshop and Illustrator to develop my creative skills. I also build websites through personal projects and for friends and family, and experiment with AI generated imagery. This helps improve my problem solving abilities, enhances my creativity, and sharpens my attention to detail.

Prompt Engineering

I use LLMs like Ollama, ChatGPT, and Claude, to assist with everyday tasks, enhance my learning, and create useful prompts to sell. This has helped me improve my prompt engineering skills and experiment with various methods to create digital imagery and develop effective solutions.

Outdoors

Whenever possible, I enjoy spending time outdoors, whether hiking or camping. Being in nature brings me a sense of peace and presents exciting challenges. It also offers a much-needed break from technology, allowing me to disconnect and recharge.

Gym Training

Going to the gym and staying fit are important parts of my lifestyle. It helps me relieve stress, relax, feel good about myself, socialise, and meet new people.

About Me

After earning a 2:1 degree in Multimedia Technology, I gained experience in eCommerce, web design, and print. Seeking a more technical path, I took a significant risk by leaving my previous career to pursue a networking apprenticeship in IT. I am a motivated individual actively seeking new career opportunities in IT, with a solid foundation in technology, problem-solving, and customer service.

Last year, I was voted Apprentice of the Year for my contributions to the AS Watson project, where I played a key role in assisting with the migration of over 1,500 sites from MPLS to SD-WAN for brands such as Superdrug, The Perfume Shop, and Savers. In this role, I supported the T2 and T3 network engineers by assisting with troubleshooting and configuration tasks, gaining hands-on experience with Cisco and Meraki devices. I also worked with the dashboards of Meraki, Palo Alto, and FortiGate for firewall management, network configuration, and log analysis. My responsibilities included ensuring compliance, securing data transmission, and optimising network efficiency while minimising operational disruptions. Additionally, I provided remote support and used SSH in the CLI for device management and troubleshooting. I utilised ServiceNow for IT service management and streamlining workflows, as well as Logic Monitor to monitor network performance, helping ensure the reliability and stability of the network infrastructure. Through this project, I not only developed my technical expertise but also enhanced my collaborative and problem solving skills, gaining a deeper understanding of networking, computer systems, and security practices.

I am committed to continuous learning and am actively expanding my knowledge through courses on INE and Pluralsight, as well as hands-on exercises on Hack The Box, to enhance my skills and stay updated with the latest industry trends. I work effectively both independently and as part of a team, always seeking opportunities to grow and improve.

Now that I’ve completed my apprenticeship, I’ve transitioned into a full-time role within the T1 Connectivity team at. I’m eager to expand my experience while continuously developing my skills, working towards industry-recognised certifications such as, but not limited to, CCNA, AZ-900, Linux+, Security+, CySA+, and NSE, with plans to pursue more advanced certifications in the future.

Level 3 - ICT Network Engineer

During my two-year Level 3 ICT apprenticeship, I developed both technical IT skills and essential soft skills through hands-on experience and structured training. The course covered key areas such as Networking, System Hardware, System Software, Monitoring, Support, and Network Security. I gained practical experience working with IT systems and devices, including Cisco routers, LogicMonitor, Palo Alto, FortiGate, and Meraki, helping me build a strong foundation in these areas.

The apprenticeship also introduced me to basic programming and DevOps, giving me a good understanding of these concepts. While I didn’t gain formal certifications, I completed mock exams and practical lab exercises in areas like CompTIA A+, Cloud+, IT Service Management, and Business Processes, which enhanced my knowledge.

I gained experience working both independently and as part of a team, assisting field engineers at over 1,500 sites. This hands-on involvement helped me develop problem-solving skills and a clear understanding of working in a professional IT environment.
